Major Advantages of Plastics

Easy to form
With the correct equipment plastics can be made into mass produced products, designed to incorporate many functions with a minimum of after-work such as machining, painting and assembly
Light-weight
Compared with other materials (for example glass) plastics are lightweight and therefore easy to handle and less expensive to move and store.
Colourable
Making items from coloured plastic is easy and the colour is consistent through the product.
Low energy consumption
From feedstock to final product, plastics typically require one-third less energy to produce. Their properties are such that they conserve energy in use.
Corrosion and chemical resistance
A plastic can be found with the required resistance to almost any known chemical. Plastics are also not prone to surface deterioration to the same extent as metals.
Insulation
Thermal, accoustic and electrical insulation and vibration damping properties make plastic the only choice in containing heat, sound and elecricity.
Adaptability
Polymers can be modified and/ior adapted relatively easily to suit many different applications.

Comparative Properties – transparent/translucent materials

Glass – has excellent weathering properties It’s mechanical and surface properties are not negatively affected over many years outdoor exposure
Acrylics – good weathering properties Standard grade better that impact modified as the rubber modifier is subject to UV attack and the impact resistance of UHI will diminish over time
Polycarbonate – uncoated pc is not suitable for outdoor use as material yellows and surface becomes hazy. With a co-extruded UV layer, the degradation is minimised but not eliminated.
PETg – uncoated material is not suitable for outdoor use.
